The air is still cold even now that the sun is beginning to rise.

“This whole time, it’s been a trap. All they want is me to test the limit of my Weave,” I say out loud.

“They don’t want to test anything,” Lyric starts. “He does. Commander Ironleaf.”

“I’m going in there,” Xander says assertively.

“Like hell you are!” Wren shouts

“Stop,” I step in front of Xander. “Don’t do that.”

“I just want a word with Ironleaf,” Xander says, pushing me to the side.

“Which is what they want,” V. says. “If you’re right, and they want Phoenix in there, they’re going to target you more than anyone else.”

“Which is exactly what you told me,” Lyric says. “So don’t be an idiot, Xander.”

“Why would they target Xander more than anyone else?” I look at V.

“You really don’t know?” Wren asks.

“Because you’re closer to him than anyone,” Lyric says. “And I bet you’d do anything to protect him, just like Xander would do for you.”

  Xander turns to face me.

“I would,” I say matter-of-factly. “So don’t make me stop you.”

Xander sighs with defeat, but stands down. He comes over and wraps his arm around my shoulder, and I rest my head on him. I know I’ve only met this man two months ago, but there isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do for him. I want him to be mine, forever.

"Well, now that that's settled," Wren's voice fills the air. “How do we get that flag?”

I pause and think about everything I know about the War Drill and everything about the Fort. The flag is on the top of the southernmost turret. How can we get there without being seen? Right at the bottom of the turret is the Elixir Chamber, and right by that is… “I’ve got it!”

Everyone turns and stares at me.

“Guys, I know how we can get the flag!” I shout.

“Do you trust me?” I look at Xander.

  “With my life,” he replies.

“What’s your idea?” Lyric asks.

“Okay, well, we need a distraction at the front gate,” I say. “I think Thorne and Arlic, you two get across, figure out some type of distraction.”

“Why the hell should I take orders from you?” Thorne starts.

“Do what he says, Ironwood,” Wren scolds.

Thorne reluctantly nods and shoots himself across the gap between Fort Weave and the Colosseum. Arlic follows after him.

“V., Lyric and Wren, you three stay here,” I look at them.

  “Why?” Lyric asks.

“We need you three here in case Fort Weave sends scouts over here to capture me,” I look at them, hoping they buy it, but really, I just can’t let them see the place where I need to go.

The three of them hesitate, but they nod.

“I can get Xander and I inside and capture the flag,” I say.

“Phoenix, no!” Wren tries to stop me. “We just told Xander he wasn’t going in, and now you want both of
